NPR’s “This I Believe” Series

The other day, as I was thinking whether to blog or not, I heard on the radio that NPR is reviving a 1950s radio series called “This I Believe” - - NPR is inviting listeners to submit 500-word essays (3 minutes to read aloud) that express a core belief - - a personal philosophy - - through a story... something highly personal. The original invitation from the  “This I Believe” series asks "you to write in your own words and then record in your own voice” and “tell not only what you believe, but how you reached your beliefs, and if they have grown, what made them grow.” The invitation says that the essay should not preach, editorialize, do any finger pointing, or even simply express views on democracy or free enterprise. Finally, the invitation clarifies that even though the program is about expressing beliefs, it’s not a religious program and the focus is on simply expressing personal beliefs in the affirmative (not a litany of what someone does not believe). To me, these goals of the “This I Believe” series - - expressing your own thoughts/beliefs, in your own words without preaching/editorializing - - seem like good principles for a blog as well.

In the first program of the series NPR aired an essay by novelist Isabel Allende that gave a good example of what the series is all about. Something Isabel Allende said seemed so poignant  - - she said “what is the point of having experience, knowledge or talent if I don't give it away? Of having stories if I don't tell them to others?” Sounds like a good reason to blog, doesn’t it?
