Google Subscriptions Someday?

I guess online businesses can make money three ways—transactions (buying/selling something), advertisements (pay per click), and subscriptions (monthly fees). What amazes me is that the pay-per-click advertising model works so well for search engines like Google. As for me, I ignore all the advertisements and only make use of the search results, just as I ignore all those Google ads embedded in most blogs and websites thanks to the Google AdSense program. When it comes to ad-clicking, I must be in the minority because Google is doing fine with the pay-per-click advertisements. Nevertheless, I was wondering if Google would someday introduce a subscription-based premium search service of some sort—not to replace its ad-based model, but to augment it. I don't mean the "ask a question, set your price" model of Google Answers, but a straightforward subscription-based access to some premium content. Sometimes, when I have trouble finding relevant material from Google searches, I almost wish for a subscription-based Google search. I think I'd go for it if the subscription fee is not prohibitive and if I could try out and see that the searches produce better results.

You're not in the minority. Only one person in a hundred clicks on Google ads. That's enough.

I don't think Google would ever present a scenario in which the free consumer index was perceived as inferior to another, similar Google product. But I can imagine Google setting up a different sort of premium product, perhaps one that made the inadequate Google Scholar more useful. Google could work out an arrangement with academic databases and other holders of protected content throughout the "hidden Internet," then offer subscription access to the actual texts that Google Scholar only hints at.

Brad, What I'm looking for would be a subscription-based access to Google Scholar like content without having to subscribe to each and every premium content provider. If enough people subscribe, maybe Google can offer a low-enough subscription fee for that content.

Isn't this interesting-- days after our exchange, Yahoo! is releasing Yahoo! Search Subscriptions. It's different from your idea (which is what I was getting at, too) ... Yahoo! makes you bring your own subscriptions to a specialized engine which crawls your preselected subscription sources. (Only a handful of such sources are currently available.) Brad, That really is interesting! Thanks for pointing this out. Noticed that Yahoo lists Consumer Reports and IEEE journals- - I had both of these paid subscriptions, but let them lapse. I did search the Consumer Reports online content quite a bit when I was subscribing to it last year. I think it'd be great if Yahoo (or Google) could offer consolidated access to several such "Deep Web" content at a lower combined price than the sum of individual subscription fees, but somehow I get the feeling no one is going to give us such subscription for cheap.
